Judge Angela L. Graves-Harrington was first elected to preside over the 246th Family District Court in November 2018, and took office on January 1, 2019. She was re-elected in November 2022, with her current term running through 2026.
Before joining the bench, Judge Graves-Harrington founded and managed her own law firm, where she practiced family, civil, and criminal law, giving her a broad base of legal experience before she became a judge. She earned her law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law (graduating in 2006), after undergraduate studies at Jackson State University and Mississippi State University.
Since joining the bench, Judge Graves-Harrington has distinguished herself as a leader in child-welfare and family-law reform. She serves as the Administrative Judge for the entire family-division of the county’s district courts (the Harris County Board of Family District Judges), and in 2025 was elected to the board of directors of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), which reflects her commitment to shaping family-court policy at both the local and national level.
Judge Graves-Harrington is also Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. This distinction is only held by a small fraction of Texas attorneys. In addition, she spearheaded the creation of a Child-Welfare Clinic at Thurgood Marshall School of Law and serves as an adjunct professor there, demonstrating her dedication to training future lawyers in child welfare and family law matters.
Over the years, she has received recognition for her work, including the Texas CASA Judicial Leadership and Innovation Award. She has also been actively involved in multiple committees and community organizations focused on child welfare, legal education, and mentorship, underscoring her holistic approach to reform and service.
